Konark Beach, Orissa

Sun Temple’ed Beach
An important part of the East India Golden Triangle circuit along with Bhubaneswar and Puri, is Konark. It is about 35 km North-East of the Hindu Pilgrimage center Puri. The Konark beach front remains a confluence of tourists coming to the famed Sun Temple or the Black Pagoda and white sand. The beach is nicknamed Chandrabhaga and is ranked amongst the finest of beaches lacing the Indian coastline.

Konark Beach Attractions
Sun-Temple or the Black Pagoda: One of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site, the Sun Temple at Konark is only 3km from the beach. It is in the form of a huge twelve-pair wheeled chariot drawn by 7 brawny horses. A fine Medieval Architectural memento, this forms the main tourist attraction of the Konark Beach, besides to rolling sands. Close by is an Archaeological Museum with a rich reserve of ancient sculptures and intricately carved antiques.

The Beach vista: Another much favorited of the Konark Beach is the sunrise in the land of the Sun Temple. The onlookers actually tend to relate the mystic sunset with the venue of the Sun Temple. The water here is not swimming friendly and it is best enjoyed from a distance, with your legs stretched and your eyes fixed at the antics of the sun beyond in the distant horizon.

The Konark Dance Festival: Held every December, the Konark Dance Festival is held right on the beach with the backdrop of the magnanimous Sun Temple. Eminent artists from across the nation perform on a single stage. The dance festival has almost all major dance performances like Odissi, Bharatnatyam, Manipuri, Kathakali, Kathak and ao on. First held under the behest of noted Odissi dancer and the Sangeet Natak Academi winner Guru Gangadhar Pradhan, this is the best time to visit Konark and partake in the Indian heritage extravaganza. A dip in the sea during the period of the festival is considered holy.
