Access
AIR :The main airport is at the main city Leh, 4 km from the
town on Fort Road. Direct flights link it to Delhi, Chandigarh, Srinagar and
Jammu. For Kargil, Suru and Zanskar valleys - Srinagar and Leh airports are
both convenient. The next option is the Airport at Kargil.
RAIL : The nearest Rail Head is Jammu, connected to all parts of
India through express trains.
ROAD : There are two routes to Ladakh, one via Himachal Pradesh and
the other via Srinagar. The best one is to approach from the Kashmir valley
via the 434 km. Srinagar-Leh road which remains open for traffic from early
June to November. The most dramatic part of this road journey is the ascent
up the 11,500 feet (3505 m.) high Zoji-La, the pass in the great Himalayan
wall that serves as the gateway to Ladakh. The J&K State Road Transport
Corporation (J&K SRTC) operates regular Deluxe & ordinary bus
services between Srinagar & Leh on this route with an overnight halt at
Kargil. Taxi cost approximately Rs 12,000. It will be wise to plan the road
trip well in advance.
The second option is to head to Manali (Himachal Pradesh). A number of high
passes fall en route this 19 hour trail, among which the highest one, known
as Taglang-La, is the world's second-highest motorable pass at an altitude
of 17,469 feet (5325 m) The State Road Transports of Himachal Pradesh &
J&K operate bus services between Manali & Leh. The bus journey
includes an overnight halt in camps at Serchu or Pang.
